195/70VR14 Pirelli Cinturato CN36.
Considering its importance as a ‘70s – ‘80s tyre; it is amazing that there hasn’t been a genuine period 195/70VR14 tyre available for years. Swathes of cars; Datsun Z cars, BMW E3, E12 cars like the E9 3.0CSL and E24 BMW 635CSi and the fabulous Alfa Romeo Montreal fitted 195/70VR14 tyres, and of course it was a very important Mercedes tyre fitting the majority of the fantastic W123 cars of the 1970s and 1980s..
Pirelli’s important range of Cinturato CN36 tyres has been taking the classic car world by storm. Its performance in some of the back to back classic tyre tests that have been run over the past years are exceptional. Not only does it have a 1968 tread pattern that was famous as the top end tyre throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, it is also built with modern compounds offering more grip than available in period, specially in the wet.
What truly sets Pirellis Collezione range apart from the rest; is the carcass. Pirelli’s build quality is of course exceptional. Built in Pirellis up to date factories, but the carcass is of a design that presents that tread pattern to the road in a manner suited to the chassis of classic cars like these Mercedes W123. It is great news that at last there is a good tyre in the size 195/70R14.
Mercedes cars that fitted 195/70R14 Tyres were:

175HR14 Pirelli Cinturato CA67.
Being a luxury car manufacturer, Mercedes clung on to the comfortable, smooth ride offered by crossply tyres right through the 1960s; much longer than Europe’s more sporting car manufacturers. At the end of the 1960s many of Mercedes models moved from fitting 6.95-14 crossply tyres onto fitting 175R14 radial tyres. (or from 7.35-14 to a 185R14).
Pirelli have recently expanded their range of classic tyres to offer a 175HR14 Cinturato CA67, very much a period tyre and a tyre of exceptional quality.
