PORSCHE driver Kevin Weeks has been declared winner of the 2008 Classic Adelaide tarmac rally after an appeal hearing.

He was closing on a win when he followed rallying protocol and stopped to assist another competitor who had run off the road on the second-last stage of the event, Clarendon.

The ruling of the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Tribunal resulted in Weeks and co-driver Bec Crunkhorn winning the event by 7.3 seconds.

Weeks, also the 2007 winner with co-driver Bec Crunkhorn, had dominated this years event over four days and more than 250 kilometres of special-stage racing.

Jim Richards and Barry Oliver, who have won Targa Tasmania eight times but never Classic Adelaide, used the occasionally wet conditions to haul themselves from sixth place overnight to third in a Porsche that is significantly heavier and less powerful than the leaders.

Both Kevin Weeks and Jim Richards used the now legendary DUNLOP DZ03G tyres. In fact the DUNLOP DZ03G was by far the most popular tyre in the field.

In all, 50 cars used DUNLOP tyres which was 43% of the entire field (19% Yokohama, 14% Bridgestone, 11% Toyo, 7% Kumho).

The 2008 Classic Adelaide welcomed more than 220 crews and cars from Britain, Hong Kong, the United States and throughout Australia. The 2009 event is scheduled for 18-22 November and will be the final round of the inaugural Australian Classic Tarmac Rally Championship for pre-1982 cars.
