Dunlop tyres have again won the epic Targa Tasmania rally.
Victorians Rex Broadbent and Michael Goedheer have won the Shannons Classic Outright competition of Targa Tasmania after a thrilling final day duel down the West Coast with fellow Porsche 911 crew of New South Wales' Bill Pye and Grant Geelan. It was the second Shannons Classic victory for Broadbent and Goedheer in the Carrera RSR replica, after first winning in the same car in 2002. Broadbent used the DUNLOP DZ03G, which proved to be the most popular tyre of the 284 car field.
Running on softer tyres better suited to the damp conditions, Pye and Geelan closed to within 18 seconds of the Victorians, butr they were unable to close the gap further on the final three stages.
Winning the Modern category were Tony Sullens and
Julie Barkley in their 4WD Subaru.
They beat home previous Modern winner, Jim Richards in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, by 46 seconds. Jim once again chose the new DUNLOP DZ03G tyres for his new car. The treacherously wet conditions on the last two days were unkind to Jim's 2WD Porsche, as he was only able to close to within 6 seconds on the 4WD Subaru.
The early leaders in the event, Simonsen and Searcy in their Mitsubishi, and the Whites in their Lamborghini (both used the DUNLOP DZ03G tyres) each had accidents on day 2 and were eliminated from the event.
Once again Dunlop tyres were the most popular choice with 55% of the Modern field (Bridgestone 17%, Kumho 7%, yokohama 6%, pirelli 6%).
