Rick Bates & Jenny Brittan in their Porsche

The 2006 Toll Shipping Rally Tasmania commenced in Burnie in dry humid conditions and as predicted the smaller four wheel drive vehicles were more suited to the road conditions but Jim Richards and Barry Oliver in their Porsche 911 GT2 were able to hold onto the lead that he gained yesterday for their third win at the event.
The battle for second was a tight fought affair with Tony Quinn /Keith Wenn going into the last stage with a 5 second gap in front of Dean Herridge and Bill Hayes. Dean Herridge from the Subaru Australia team took up the challenge and showed his rally heritage with an inspired drive to take 6 seconds from Quinn and taking second place by one second in what is there first fully fledged Tarmac Rally.
This year, DUNLOP tyres were fitted to 6 of the 10 leading cars, and a whoping 35% of the Modern field. This placed DUNLOP well clear of its competitors, and further improving its share over last year.

In the Heritage section Rick Bates and Jenny Brittan in their DUNLOP-shod Porsche 911 RS Replica added to their Classic Win at 2005 Classic Adelaide by a convincing 1.58 from Peter and Rebecca Eames in their Porsche 911 Carrera with the Tasmanian pair of David Cooper and Leon Duggan finishing third in a 1977 Holden Torana A9X a further 59 seconds behind. Once again DUNLOP tyres dominated this class with 43% of all tyres used.
